We have successfully designed and prepared a polymer multilayer film (PMF) with UV-resistance & High transmittance which could provide a low-cost, simple but effective way to address the weight issue of PV modules.
Gorter et al. studied and compared 15 polymer materials such as Polyvinylideenfluoride (PVDF), Ethyl-Tetrafluorethylene (ETFE), Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), etc., to replace photovoltaic glass materials as front cover. Fluorides offer excellent UV-resistance but are up to 20 times more expensive per kilogram compared to glass [, , ].
By adjusting the periodic structure of the material layers and the thickness of layers, the polymer multilayer film (PMF) only reflects UV light band, while other wavelength bands that respond to the c-Si cell are transmitted.
As shown in Table 2, taking the standard PV cell of 1.9 square meters as a reference, the weights of PV glass (thickness of 3.2 mm) and PMF (thickness of 20 μm) are 15.19 kg and 0.05 kg respectively. The weight of former is 315 times than that of the latter.
Normally, the weight of glass in the single-glass PV module takes up about 70% of the entire photovoltaic module. Therefore, only by finding alternative materials for photovoltaic glass can it be possible to effectively address the weight issue of PV modules.
