Figure 6 shows the use of push-pull converters (such as the Texas Instruments SN6505-Q1) to generate an isolated power supply for isolated IGBT gate drivers in a three-phase traction inverter. Each of the six IGBTs has a sepa-rate power supply in order to provide greater redundancy and simplify routing.
Switching power supplies are the most commonly used type of power supply in any application. This is especially true in high voltage/high current power supplies. The idea behind isolation is that there is no direct path for DC currents on the high voltage side to conduct over to the low voltage side of the power supply via a power plane.
The question of whether to connect the chassis ground and signal ground on the DC side is widespread, difficult to understand, and it depends on the application. Inevitably, if you connect the two sides with capacitors as is best practices, you shouldn't need to make a second connection back to the chassis on the output side.
The chassis will still act like a Faraday cage in either case. In systems where power is being regulated down to a low level, but there is still the possibility of ESD onto a board with dense digital cirucitry, you might make multiple connections directly to the chassis.
This is especially important in DC power supplies, which might output high current that can be dangerous to the user. In a DC power supply, the arrangement of power supply ground in the system will be a major determinant of safety, as well as noise, heat dissipation, and ability to galvanically isolate different portions of the system.
