A circuit breaker in substation is a key component in electrical power systems, designed to interrupt the flow of electricity when a fault occurs, such as a short circuit or overload. Depending on system design, these devices can operate manually or automatically and come in various types, including air, vacuum, oil, and SF₆ gas.
Air circuit breakers are also known to be very reliable - they typically provide over 20 years of service life before needing to be replaced. The oil circuit breaker is another type of breaker that can be found in power substations.
This standard specifies the electrical services requirements including power, lighting, heating and dehumidification services in substations at all voltages. This document forms part of the Company’s Integrated Business System and its requirements are mandatory throughout UK Power Networks.
Only approved equipment and fittings shall be used within a UK Power Networks substation. The approved equipment is listed in EAS 07-1000. Battery rooms with vented batteries shall use intrinsically safe light fittings and accessories suitable for a zone 1 hazardous area.
Switchgear: Includes a variety of equipment including disconnectors, fuses, and lightening arrestors often found in substations. This group of equipment ensures the safe disconnection of an electrical circuit when a fault occurs or can isolate a circuit when maintenance needs to be conducted.
Circuit breaker: Opens to break the circuit should a fault be detected, preventing the flow of electricity. A circuit breaker must be closed to resume normal operation of a circuit. Busbar: A piece of metal that conducts electricity across its span. Equipment in substations is usually clamped directly on to these busbars.
