Here, we propose a large-scale 2-bit millimeter-wave programmable metasurface to build an integrated smart base station framework for 6G communications. The meta-array is composed of 30 × 30 meta-elements, each with two embedded positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes.
The simulation and experimental results indicate that the designed large-scale metasurface possesses 2-bit phase-modulation capability in the millimeter-wave band and achieves a wide beam-scanning range in free space (–70° ≤ θ ≤ 70°, 0° ≤ φ ≤ 360°) with a gain of 23 dBi.
The independent and reconfigurable capabilities in manipulating the propagation directions of four streams have facilitated the smart communication of the new types of base stations. We summarize the properties of the proposed beamforming system in Table 1.
The good performance indicates its significant applications as a base station auxiliary equipment working in the millimeter-wave band and suggests its potential to inspire the development of new wireless communication technologies.
Single-stream wireless communication. For illustrating the potential of the proposed prototype in the application of a smart 6G base station, we take the proposed system to assist a millimeter-wave base station and validate its performance of wireless communication in a realistic indoor scenario.
